For the plant collector extraordinaire! This is the world's largest ‘unbranched’ flower, reaching 6 feet+ in flower height! This species is known as the “giant corpse flower” for its putrid scent, which attracts flies for pollination. We offer progeny from our two giant parents, ‘Audrey’ and ‘Little Shop of Horrors’. The seedlings offered in 2024 have germinated as of July, and under ideal conditions, can reach blooming size within 8 to 12 years. The warmer the growing conditions the better, as this is a lowland Southeast Asian plant from Sumatra.
Typically this plant stays vegetative for 12 to 24 months, before shedding and going into a dormant rest. We still occasionally water them during the rest period, and they sprout again within 6 to 12 months, depending on conditions. This cycle repeats until they reach blooming size, after which they will alternate between vegetation and flowers about every 3 years (for us). We have heard of hotter environments being about to cycle through the flowers between one and two years, but have never been able to produce them that fast here.
This is truly a collectible tropical plant, which always holds value for re-selling or trading if you decide it gets too big for your space! A mature plant will produce a corm that is well over 100 lbs, with most of the largest recorded at 150lbs plus!
