Description
Native to several countries in Southeast Asia including Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hainan China, Borneo, and the Philippines. This species is also known as the foxtail orchid due to its arching spikes fully covered in flowers that average 3/4" to 1" in size. These plants usually flower in January or February, and the experience of watching the first flowers open until they fall lasts about 2 to 3 months. They also produce a lovely fragrance, having a strong and refreshing floral scent. The foliage is also impressive as it is thick and wide with striping.
Grow in medium light and water when just dry except when in flower (keep slightly more moist then) and fertilize year round. These grow well in coarse bark mixes with well-drained pots, but can also be grown in open baskets like Vanda if they are watered frequently and have good humidity.
Current plants offered are either in 4.5" or 5.5" pots, as show in the photo, unless offered otherwise in the purchase options. The flower and foliage size photos are only used as examples, and the actualy 2023 batch are overall larger plants like in the size comparison photo. See description below for available plants.
Spikes are low as of 11/30 and are set to develop and flower by late January to February.
*Please note, it is common for this species to have some discoloration in the foliage, or to develop 'sooty' mold, which is black and on the undersides of the leaves due to sap. This can be wiped off with a wet paper towel.
