We made this hybrid in 2001 to see what would happen if we crossed one of the largest flowered Bulbophyllums, Bulb. echinolabium, with the very rare and giant-leafed but small-flowered Bulb. beccarii. The result is quite nice, with 3-inch flowers that come out sequentially on stems that can have as many as 30 to 40 3" red veined over a yellow background flowers over a long period of time! This plant's flowers produce an odor reminiscent of carrion. The species Bulbophyllum beccarii is nearly impossible to find, so this vigorous hybrid is the next best thing! You can mount these on fibrous palm trees if you live in south Florida otherwise grow them in azalea pots or bulb pans in New Zealand Sphagnum moss. We have flowered nearly all of these and are offering divisions of our best clones. Very limited availability.
